One of the special things about Egyptian dance is the magical use of muscle isolation. This is a skill that takes years to perfect. Hard work is required, and dedication to practice in building up muscle memory and dexterity and strength. A good way to begin isolation techniques is the learn how to separate the body above and below the waist. This works the abdominals, the diaphragm and hip muscles. Begin by planting the feet firmly on the floor, having them spaced no wider than your hip joints. If you present an A line, then your feet are too far apart. Tighten up the buttocks slightly, place your hands lightly on the hips, and then slide your rib cage to the left and then the right. There should be no sagging or tilting of the shoulders which remain straight. There should be a sensation of pulling of the muscles around the waist. The hips and legs remain immobile. Practised for 10 to 15 minutes per day, this exercise will trim the waist and improve suppleness and strength. |
